Introduction
Some of us who came of age in the 1990s might hear a familiar melody upon encountering this exhibition’s title—an earworm drawn from the soundtrack of “Keluarga Cemara” TV series, adapted from Arswendo Atmowiloto’s published compilation of short stories in 1981. The narrative traces a middle-class Jakarta family abruptly displaced into rural precarity, where intimacy, care, and mutual reliance emerge as their only durable forms of wealth. At the same time, set against the New Order, the narrative quietly counters state claims of equitable growth, revealing instead uneven development and systemic marginalization. Their experience suggests that poverty is not incidental nor individual, but systemic and shared.
This exhibition foregrounds two interwoven propositions: family as life’s greatest wealth, and its uneasy resonance within historical and contemporary socio-political realities. In this context, the notion of “family” assumes a double valence, serving both as an affective refuge and as a mechanism for consolidating power, privilege, and access, echoing longer histories of patronage and nepotism.
Featuring works by Nindityo Adipurnomo and Agung Kurniawan, the exhibition probes this slippage. Adipurnomo’s Keluarga Dinasti series articulates a quiet disquiet, in which kinship becomes both an instrument and a consequence of political ambition. Kurniawan’s reactivated works register an uncanny continuity as the lingering specter of the New Order reasserts itself in contemporary life. Together, their work suggests that what endures is not only the ideal of family as refuge, but also its persistent entanglement with the structures that shape inequality.

Biografi
Agung Kurniawan worked with various media, from drawing to performance, he often uses taboo themes as narratives in his works. He addresses issues such as political violence, gender, and the genocide of Indonesian communist sympathizers in 1965. He also utilizes curation and festivals as a medium to process issues that he believes require public space as part of the creative process. His most recent multi-event festival was Amuk 1812, which chronicled the British invasion of Yogyakarta in 1812.
In addition to his work as an artist, he also helped initiate the establishment of institutions such as the Indonesian Visual Art Archive (1995) and the Kedai Kebun Forum (1996). His works are collected by various institutions, including the Singapore Art Museum, the National Art Gallery Singapore, the Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and several private museums in Indonesia and abroad. He currently lives and works in Yogyakarta.
Nindityo Adipurnomo was born in Semarang – Central Java in 1961. In 1980 he began living in Yogya until now. He studied Fine Arts at STSRI “ASRI” – Yogyakarta Painting School, then at “Rijks Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten” Amsterdam in 1986 – 1987. Working as a free-medium artist. Nindityo pays close attention to popular culture that develops from local craft creativity.
Until now, Nindityo has initiated many art projects that are participatory engagement with visitors who appreciate works of art and cross-disciplinary dance and performance besides; continuing to work with conventional mediums from academic art education. Nindityo held solo exhibitions, art project presentations and group exhibitions in national and international forums (especially in regional areas) such as the Havana Biennale, SOONSBEEK International Sculpture Exhibition. Some of Nindityo’s works are in museum collections in Fukuoka, Queensland and Singapore, and MIIAM Chiang May as well as several individual collectors in Indonesia and Asia. Starting to learn to direct attention to the idea of anthroposcene in many aspects of his work thinking.
Established and managed Cemeti Art House Yogyakarta with artist Mella Jaarsma from 1987 to 2017 in Yogyakarta. Except as co-owner Mella Jaarsma is part of the Board of Trustees of Cemeti Art House. Received the “Long Life Achievement Award John D. Rockefeller 3rd” 2015. One of the founders and members of the Board of Trustees of the IVAA Foundation (Indonesian Visual Art Archive). Former member of the Board of Trustees of the Yogyakarta Biennale Foundation (up to the 6th Equator Biennale).
