Barasub will present a 24-hour performance at Cemeti titled Wahana Kuda Binal. Over the course of a full day and night, Barasub will transform Cemeti’s gallery space into a place of private living, working, and exhibiting. The coexistence of different activities within one room serves as a simulation of how Cemeti’s first building (the private home of Mella Jaarsma and Nindityo Adipurnomo) and many art spaces in Yogyakarta have been used since that time. At night, following the opening of The First Political Space Called Home, Barasub will install personal belongings—TV, mattress, stove, and more—alongside work-related objects such as a screen-printing table.

Throughout the night at Cemeti, Barasub will arrange an exhibition by artist Gigi Nyala, scheduled to open the next morning (Saturday, September 30) at 9 a.m. On the following afternoon, Barasub will produce a zine documenting the multifunctional use of the space, which they will launch during an informal discussion event on modes of working and youth culture, featuring guest speakers Gigi Nyala, Genderuwo Press, and Cemeti.

This event is part of The First Political Space Called Home, an art project initiated by Dito Yuwono that invites five Yogyakarta-based collectives to collaborate: Barasub, Laras, RAR Editions, Sewon Screening, and Studio Batu. The project is included in Cemeti’s Maintenance Works program (January 2017–June 2018).
